The central government has informed that the prices of onion and tomato will start reducing in the next 15 to 20 days.
Agriculture Secretary S K Pattanayak. had informed that the issue of the recent price increase of onion and tomato is only temporary. The situation is very likely to change soon. Planting of onion in Maharashtra, the leading producer, is quite good. Once the onions start arriving from this state, the price of onion will start coming down. This is expected in the next 15 to 20 days. Then, the price of onion will be restored to the normal level.
In a similar trend, the tomato plants have also bloomed and the stage is soon set for the harvesting of tomatoes. Once these tomatoes start arriving in the market, the price of tomato will come down in both the wholesale and retail markets.
The seasonal growth and harvest of onion were greatly affected this year due to the erratic rainy season and drought conditions, Subsequently, the quantity of onion for the wholesale and retail markets was much lesser. This led to the increase in the price of onion.
