The total number of seats available in the engineering colleges throughout the country is to be reduced by 1 Lakh. Presently, there are 10360 engineering colleges in the country offering seats for 37 lakh students.

However, 60% seats remain unfilled in most of the colleges. This has led to a situation where great financial difficulties are encountered to the level of monthly salaries not being paid to the faculty members and other employees.

AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) has ordered that the engineering colleges with less than 30% of the capacity to be closed.

With this development, thousands of colleges have been denied permission to admit new students in the coming academic year in B.E. and B.Tech. Courses. Thus. AICTE circles inform that there would be a reduction of 1 Lakh engineering college seats in the next academic year.
