Somugan, a demon performed intense penance obtaining immortality, threatened the lives of many holy Sages and Devargal in the heaven. Somugan even imprisoned Brahma, seizing the Vedas from him. So the concern was informed to Lord Vishnu who announced the war on Somugan to destroy him. Lord Vishnu took the avatar of Ranganatha Swamy and destroyed the Asura, Somugan. So the temple is praised for this epic greatness of Lord Vishnu gaining the fame from this background of ancient history.
