In Tanjore in the state of Tamil Nadu is located one of the famous temples that was built by the famous king Raja Raja Chola1. This Brihadeeswarar temple is regarded as one of the biggest temples in southern India and is around 350 kms from southwest of Chennai.
This amazing temple with splendid architecture is also a part of UNESCO World Heritage site.
It is really superb that the Shiva linga present in this temple is the largest ever in the world and this temple is visited by many throughout the year. It is sensational that this temple is of 212 ft in height and the nandhi present is second biggest ever in India and is made of a single stone. It was in the 11th century this temple was initially built and the walls surrounding this temple were built after 16th century.
One important piece of information is in the year 2010 this temple had completed a mammoth 1000 years and that is fantastic. The main deities in this temple are Brihadeeswarar and Perianayaki.
It is great to mention that this temple built by Raja Raja Chola 1 was constructed using granite and more than 1,30,000 tonnes of granite were used. People visiting this temple would be stunned by the remarkable spire Vimana that is present at the top weighing 80 tonnes and it is shaped in the form of a beautiful lotus. It is superb to note that vasthu sasthras were followed in building this temple.
It is worthy to mention that in this temple there are also shrines of Lord Ganesh, Lord Muruga, Goddess Parvati, Dakshinamurthy etc. Visitors would be surprised to see a large verandah with pillars with a perimeter of 450 metres. It must be noted that this temple had water moat around it initially. Special poojas taking place in this temple during aadipooram, thiruvathirai etc are well known now.
