Ostrich is a huge bird that is mostly found in African countries is known. The egg of an ostrich is considered as the biggest egg. It is interesting to note that ostriches don’t have the ability to fly like other birds but they are capable of running at great speeds when compared to other birds.
It is well known fact that breeding of an ostrich is not an easy task. The news is Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur, Chennai has bred as many as six generations of common ostriches and that is superb. According to a veterinarian of this famous zoo, oldest ostrich laid as many as 11 eggs and five of those eggs got hatched. The chicks that got hatched were in healthy state is known from the fact that they weighed 900 gms each.
It must be noted that in the year 2011 two ostriches from Kattuppakkam based Poultry Research Station were procured by this zoo. Eggs laid were incubated by both male as well as female ostrich and as a result the chicks came out of the eggs after 44 days. This happened in the month of March in 2011.
Mr. Yuvaraj who is the director of this popular zoo spoke about how ostriches have been laying eggs and how these eggs were naturally incubated by these pair of ostriches. He also spoke about how the temperatures around the enclosure would be checked frequently in order to get the ideal temperature for the eggs to hatch.
He also shared his thoughts about the balanced food and management practices that play a huge part in making ostrich lay eggs. Mr. Yuvaraj later spoke about how the zoo had paid great attention and took care of above two aspects for successful breeding of ostriches. It is important to mention here that this Chennai zoo has given ostrich to eight other zoos in India and this was done under animal exchange programme.
