It is known that Pulicat Lake is the second biggest brackish water lake in India. It must be noted that the collector of Thiruvallur has banned people and tourists from taking rides on boats in this lake because of the safety issue. Now it is said that the people living in the nearby places of this lake are demanding to set up Muttukadu like boathouse facility in this Pulicat.
It must be noted that presently the tourists and people are using fishing boats for riding in this lake. The most important point to note here is there are no safety features available at present in these boats.
Durai Mahendran who is the traditional fishermen associate secretary now wants the tourism department to set up boating facility that would have safety features. He also spoke about how the fishermen who operates these fishing boats don’t know about the safety measures that is needed and shared few things about the importance of life vests. There were many instances of people losing their precious lives due to drowning and this has led to ban on boating in this lake.
Durai Mahendran cited the example of the incident that took place in the year 2011 where as many as 25 people travelled in a fishing boat that had a capacity of 300 kg to 400 kg. He confirmed that due to overloading 22 people lost their lives. He also threw light on the fact that fishermen use fishing boats to carry people for joy rides and they charge Rs 1000 for a group of 5 to 6 people. Few accidents take place every year and this is confirmed by the Thiruvallur traditional fishermen association. he expressed his unhappiness and said dozen lives that were lost in the year 2017.
It is now revealed that police and fisheries officials recently met villagers and spoke about taking the tourists for joyrides, safety measures etc.
