Kumbakonam is a popular town in Tanjore district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is in this Kumbakonam the famous Ramaswamy temple is situated and this temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. It was in the 16th century this temple was constructed and Govinda Nayak Dikshitar played a huge role in the construction of this temple. It must be noted that this Govinda Nayak was the prime minister of Nayaks. It is well known that these Nayaks ruled Tanjore. Located 2 kms from the main Kumbakonam this temple could be reached easily by the people.
It is important to note that at the central shrine image of Lord Rama is be present in sitting posture along with his wife Goddess Seetha and Lord Hanuman is seen in worshiping posture. It is really sensational that people visiting this temple would be surprised to see Lord Rama’s brothers like Lakshman, Bharathan, Chatrugunan together in standing posture and this is very rare.
People would also be amazed to see the stone carvings of Lord Rama katha, vamana avatharam etc and these are present in plenty in the maha mandapam of this temple. It is superb that the prahara present outside has got as many as 219 wall paintings on it. It is worthy to note that the three tier gopuram surrounded by walls on all the sides gives an amazing look to this temple.
One important piece of information is on 9th of September in the year 2015 maha kumbhabishekam was performed.
It is known that once in every 12 years Hindu festival mahamaham is being celebrated and during this festival many people take a dip in the holy water tank. This Ramaswamy temple of Kumbakonam is connected with this mahamaham festival.
This popular Ramaswamy temple is opened for the people from morning 6 am to 12 am and then from 4 pm to 9 pm.
