It is a very common sight in Thiruvannamalai to see a large number of ascetics - called Samiyars in Tamil - who are supposed to have renounced the normal life and leading a life of seclusion and prayer. They can be seen on the streets or roads, and the temple halls or mandapams, temples and the mountain.

Most of them are known as Sidha following a specific ascetic lifestyle. Among the Sidhars, Mooku Podi Siddhar is rather popular. However, not much is known about his origin or his personal details. He does not talk much. He wears a green shawl and frequently inhales Mooku Podi.

As he remains silent most of the times, the occasions where he looks at someone in particular or talks something is rather very rare. In case he looks at something or someone or talks, it is indeed considered as a blessing.

It is gathered that the devotees keep waiting for a long while to hear the Mooku Podi Siddhar utter a few words.

The devotees consider that it is rare for him to open his eyes and look at anyone or anything – it is even more extraordinary if he talks. Devotees keep visiting from far-off places to seek his blessings. Especially, it is a rather normal thing to watch some ultra-rich people waiting for the above occasions.
