Situated at about 72kms from the city of Chennai, Kanchipuram is an important town in the state of Tamil Nadu. In this Kanchipuram is present popular Kailasanathar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and this temple has been attracting many people. It is worthy to note that Rajasimha of Pallava Dynasty is responsible for building this temple in Dravidian style and it was built from 685 AD to 705 AD. His son Mahendra Varma Pallava completed the construction later. It was previously known as Rajasimha Pallavesvara Grahm.
It must be noted that this Kailasanathar temple is one of the three Kanchis present in Kanchipuram and Vishnu and Jain Kanchi are the other two Kanchis present here. Present at the Vedavathi River bank this temple is the oldest ever in this Kanchipuram.
It is said that during the war period this amazing temple helped rulers in providing security. People visiting this temple would be surprised to see a long tunnel that was made by the kings to escape from their enemies. It is really superb that the foundation of this temple was constructed using granite. Sandstone was used in making the outer structures and cravings. This temple has got as many as 58 shrines of smaller capacity built into the niches of compound wall.
This temple has got large Shiva Linga idol with as many as 16 stripes and is awesome. It must be noted that there are also mandapams, compound walls, gopuram present in this temple and the entrance wall has got 8 small shrines and gopuram. The presence of huge nandhi in the front facing this temple of Kailasanathar is simply stunning.
Founded in the year 1861 Archaeological Survey of India or ASI is an organisation that preserves cultural monuments and this temple is now maintained by this ASI.
This temple is open to visitors and others from 6 am to 12 am and then from 4 pm to 8 pm on all days.
