Dreadful Madras Eye - the causes and cures

The Tamil Calendar month Margazhi symbolizes winter in Tamil Nadu - Shivering cold and snowfall prevail during this month. It is quite probable that this cold weather may lead to several body complaints and illnesses.

One of the common complaints is the reddening (pink colour) of the eyes or the inflammation in the eyelid region. This is popularly known as ‘Madras Eye’. Presently, Madras Eye is spreading fast and true all over in the Chennai Metro City.

The inflammation of the eyelid region actually occurs in the white part of the eye.  The area affected is ‘conjunctival’ and the complaint is known as conjunctivitis. This affected part is a very thin and light tissue on the white part of the eye and the interior of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis or Madras Eye is highly infectious and quite easily affects the children.

Symptoms

One of the most recognizable symptoms of Madras Eye is the reddening of the eye. Complaints such as water oozing out of the eyes or getting collected in the eyes in excess quantities, irritation and pain in the eyes, white deposits blocking the eyes and making it difficult to open the eyes are the symptoms of inflammation of the eyelid area caused mainly by allergy and toxicity.

Cure

If these symptoms are detected it is advisable to consult the eye specialist doctor immediately. Start taking the treatment as per the prescription. The affected eye should be washed with cold water frequently. It is also better to wash the hands frequently with soap and water.

The affected person must use a separate personal towel, kerchief, pillow cover, bedspread, and soap. Wearing contact lens must be avoided. It is better to wear sunglasses instead.

When eyes are affected like above, it is better to avoid frequently touching/scratching the eyes. Also, never use any ointment or eye-drops without the doctor’s prescription. Do not share the eye makeup items, contact lens, etc., with others. Do not wash your clothes along with the others` clothes.

It is wrong to infer that looking eye-to-eye with the affected person causes infection as generally believed. In case you happen to touch the affected person, please wash your hands with soap and water. In order to prevent the agencies which cause allergy, better was the items like bedspreads, pillow covers, etc., with hot water and soap.

The people confirmed as affected by Madras Eye should avoid contact with others from the beginning of the treatment till there is some improvement. This would help reduce the possibility of spreading through infection.
