Weather in Chennai remain conducive for light rains to continue for the next 24-48 hours. In fact, several parts of the city are already witnessing light rains since the morning hours.

The State capital had recorded very light rainfall during the last 24 hours. These rains can be attributed to the weather system brewing in Bay of Bengal, close to Tamil Nadu coast.

According to Skymet Weather, the low pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal is now seen as a trough of low near South Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. A cyclonic circulation is also embedded in the same area.

With the system closer to the southern coast of the state, intensity of rains will be more over southern parts. However, peripherals of the system would affect the weather over Chennai and the city could see light showers. Sky conditions would remain cloudy throughout the day but moderate to heavy showers are ruled out. Thus, Chennaites need not worry about waterlogging or traffic jams.

Weathermen predict on and off rains would continue over the city for the next 48 hours. Day would remain warm and humid and night over Chennai would remain comfortable.

Chennai does not record much rains during January. In fact, there is a steep drop in the rainfall during this month. As in when, we progress further in the season, rains would start vanishing from the region.

For instance, the monthly average for Chennai for January stands at 25.9 mm of rain as compared to 177 mm in December. This figure further reduces to 3.4 mm and 3.5 mm in February and March, respectively.
