Restoration of Cooum River has been going on for some time now. The government of Tamil Nadu has been spending huge money in this regard is well known.  The news is some people have dumped construction plus plastic waste around this Cooum and this has created problem now.

It is now said that dumping of these waste on the stretch between Koyambedu railway station and Maduravoyal bypass has been creating issues for the people there. The presence of construction wastes on the Chennai- Bengaluru national highway has now made lives of people difficult. It must be noted that that police and Greater Chennai Corporation doesn’t bother about this issue.

One important piece of information is the CRRT or Chennai River Restoration Trust known for monitoring the progress of the Cooum River work doesn’t know about this dumping of wastes issue.

According to an official from this CRRT, reviewing of the projects progress was not done for a long time by them and it was being carried out by PWD and corporation.

It is shocking to note that lots of plastic plus non-biodegradable wastes were dumped near the river bed and this was done by the Adayalampattu panchayat. This dumping of waste near the famous Dr MGR Educational and Research institute is of serious concern.

Moreover when the height of the dump increases the panchayat workers set fire to the wastes. This place is also used as open defecation now.

According to corporation sources, dumping of wastes were at the places that is out of their jurisdiction and they are not in a position to solve it. It is now said that the dumping of wastes at this place is falls inside the limits of the corporation only.

Poor quality of air in the neighbourhood is creating big issue now and this was mainly due to dumping of construction wastes by the roadside. It is sad that the highway was similar to a dust bowl on Saturday morning itself and this was because of some miscreants setting fire to the waste.

Particulate matter concentration in the neighbourhood places is a big issue and this was mainly due to illegal dumping of waste plus also due to burning of the wastes. This was confirmed by the Central Pollution Control Board later.

Mr. Yuvaraj, president of TN sand lorry owner’s federation, said in order to prevent the accidents, pot holes were filled with debris by the police and people also create issues by dumping construction wastes on roadside.
