Located at about 8 kms from Madurai, Thiruparamkunram is a place that has got the highly famous temple of Lord Subramanya Swamy. This is the place where Lord Muruga or Subramanya Swamy married Deviyani. It is known that this Deviyani is the daughter of Devendiran.
This temple is famous for being one of the six houses of Lord Muruga and is visited by huge number of devotees from all over. Speciality of this temple is Lord Muruga would be seen in sitting and in the wedding posture and it is the only temple out of the six to have this type of posture.
It is worthy to mention that in this temple ‘Vel’ of Lord Muruga is also offered abishekam and that is superb. It is said that Lord Muruga came to this place after defeating demon Surapadman using his ‘Vel’ and hence great importance is given to Lord Muruga’s power of weapon or vel.
People coming to this temple would see the deities of lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu apart from other deities like Lord Vinayaka, Goddess Durga etc. At this temple six daily rituals plus three yearly festivals are held and people visiting this temple during kanda shasthi festival would be surprised. It is important to note that in this temple punugu is applied to Lord Muruga as it is a cave temple.
It is interesting to note that this temple was carved out of a hill and temple built of rock cut architecture was first built by the Pandyas in the 6th century and later there were many additions during the Nayakars period in 16th century. Some of the popular poets who sang the praise of this temple are Arunagirinathar, Nakirar, Sundarar and Manikavachakar. Glory of this superb temple could also be seen in Thiruppugazh, Kandapuranam etc.
This temple is open for the devotees from morning 5:30 am to 1pm and from 4pm to 9pm.
