The news that has come out now is on Wednesday the proposal to expand Chennai Metropolitan Area from the current 1189sqkms to 8878 sq km would be notified by the government. It must be noted that parts of Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur districts plus Arakkonam taluk would be included in this expansion.
By this expansion the Chennai Metropolitan area would become second biggest in India after the National Capital Region or NCR which is of 46,208 sq km in area.
Public comments on this expansion would be sought and this was confirmed by the official from the Housing and Urban Development Department.
It is now revealed that this expansion of Chennai metropolitan area would overtake Bangalore Metropolitan Region which is of area 8005 sq km. Hyderabad Metropolitan Region of area of 7257 sq km would then become fourth biggest in India.
It is worthy to mention here that Pune Metropolitan Region of area 6616.79 sq km would be fifth biggest in India and this would be followed by Vishakapatnam Metropolitan region of area 5573 sq km at sixth.
It is known that NCR has got a population of 46.05 million and next comes Greater Mumbai Metropolitan Region with a population of 20.80 million. Soon Greater Mumbai Metropolitan Region would be pushed to seventh in the area because of the extension of Chennai Metropolitan area.
