The city of Trichy or Tiruchirappalli is famous for being the third biggest in area in Tamil Nadu. Trichy is at a distance of 322 kms from Chennai is known. In this Trichy is located the popular Uchchi Pillayar temple and this temple is visited by many devotees. It must be noted that this temple was built in 7th century. Situated at the top of a rock this Pillayar temple is of height of 83 metre and people coming to this temple would be amazed by the rock architecture. It must be noted that this Uchchi Pillayar temple is combination of two temples. One is dedicated to Lord Vinayakar and other is dedicated to his father Lord Shiva. This temple is also known for being one of the oldest temples in the world. It is worthy to mention that at this rock Lord Ganesh ran from the king Vibishana. This place was used by the emperors of Vijaynagara as well as by the British for military fortification and hence it was called as rock fort.
It is worthy to note that Lord Shiva or Thayumanaswamy is carved in the middle of the rock and Lord Ganesh temple is located at the top of the rock. Huge Shiva linga present here is simply superb and there is also separate sanctum for Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva temple is bigger than Lord Ganesh temple.
People could reach Lord Ganesh temple here by means of steep steps. Nearby places like Srirangam, plus total view of the city of Trichy etc could be seen from here and it is sensational.
This uchchi pillayar temple would be opened daily from 6am to 8pm and Lord Shiva temple would be opened from 6am to 12pm and then from 4 pm till 8pm.
