Prospects of change in tollgate charges

It is gathered that there may be a change in the payment process in all the tollgates located on the highways throughout the country. In place of the present charges for the specific road being taken, the idea of replacing it with charges based on the distance travelled is being earnestly explored.

All the National and State highways throughout the country have been upgraded for better use, and tollgates have been set up along these highways and charges are collected from the vehicle plying on these highways.

It has become a regular routine for the vehicles with politicians or VIPs trying to pass without paying the toll charges and indulge in arguments and tiffs. Presently, whenever a few 100 Km of the highway is revamped, the charges are made for the entire highway length. Thus, even the vehicles plying only a short distance on this specific highway have to pay the charges for the entire highway length. This has caused heavy resentment among the public who have protested strongly against this.

In this scenario, the central ministry of transportation and highways is all set to introduce a new procedure on toll charges.

Closed toll policy

Earlier, a policy, known as ‘open toll policy’, was being practised. Now, a new policy – known as ‘closed toll policy’ is set to be implemented.

In this procedure, the vehicles need only to pay according to the distance in km travelled on the specific highway. There is no need to pay for the entire length of the highway.

An official from the ministry informed that on a trial basis, in the 1st phase, this new closed toll policy will be implemented in the eastern Outer Ring  Express highway from Delhi to Uttar Pradesh via Haryana.

The central finance minister Arun Jaitley also explained in this regard that the central government is set to adopt the policy of changing the toll according to the distance travelled on the highway. In order to reduce the time delay in the toll gates, the central government has already introduced the system of making the advance toll charges,
