Trains are one of the highly sought after modes of transport along with bus are known to us. Presently the people who travel to their destinations by trains every day from western suburbs to southern areas find it difficult because of the lack of direct EMU services between Thiruvallur and Tambaram in Chennai. As a result of this issue the commuters have to change their trains at Chennai central and they find it tough.
The good news is this won’t be a problem hereafter as Chennai division of southern railways is planning to run a direct train between Tambaram and Thiruvallur through Chennai Beach in the peak hours.
On 31st of January 2018 a DRUCC or Divisional Rail Users Consultative Committee meeting took place and the issue of direct trains between Tambaram and Thiruvaalur via Beach was discussed.
According to the statement of the officials it is clear that around 60000 people travel from western suburb areas such as Avadi, Thiruvallur etc to places such as Guindy, Tambaram etc and this form 20 percent of the total passengers on the section. It must be noted that till now on the Tambaram section 12-car EMU trains are run and on Thiruvallur section 9-car EMU are run. This has resulted in not running direct trains between Tambaram and Thiruvallur.
It is now confirmed that extension of platforms at more than 30 stations on the Thiruvallur section to run as many as 12-car trains have been completed by the divisional engineers of southern railways. According to a senior official at least four 12-car rakes would go to Chennai and they would run on Thiruvallur section. Only after taking the operational problems into consideration the schedules of these direct trains would be finalized. It is important to note that completion of quadrupling project on the Chennai Beach – Washermanpet section would be a barrier.
It is known that recently bus fares were increased and this has led to many problems for the daily commuters. Now it is clear that the commuters use trains as their means of transport and this is proved by the number of season tickets sold by the railways. This move to introduce direct trains has now come at the right time for the sake of passengers who depend on trains daily.
A daily passenger named Mr John Charles shared his thoughts on this and said it would be easier for him as he would be able to travel in the same train without getting down at Chennai Beach or Chennai Central. It must be noted that he travels daily from his house in Pattabiram to his office at Chetpet.
Mr Charles also threw light on how travelling in bus takes more time and people suffer from dust pollution etc. He further spoke about how travelling in the city buses is not safe for women passengers. During rainy season people find it more difficult in the buses.
It is known that there are no direct buses available for the passengers who travel from western and southern areas but there are services that connect Avadi to T.Nagar.
