The city of Chennai has been witnessing dry weather conditions for quite some time now. In fact, the entire month of January has remained dry for the capital city of Tamil Nadu. So much so that there have just been about two days when Chennai recorded light rains.
Even then, the city recorded only light rainfall activity and heavy showers stayed far away from Chennai. The average rainfall for Chennai during the month of January stands at 29.5 mm. However, the city this year has recorded only 1.9 mm resulting in a massive rain deficiency.
There has been a city or two in the state of Tamil Nadu where heavy rainfall was recorded, but, the systems which were giving rains were not in proximity of Chennai which resulted in no rain show over the region.
However, now, rain gods are all set to bestow some kindness over the city of Chennai. Thus, due to amplification of easterly waves, warm and moist winds will affect Chennai city and Tamil Nadu around February 5, 6 and 7.
Hence, clouding will increase February 5 onward and will become dense around February 7. With this, short spells of light rains are expected over Chennai on February 7. However, these showers will not be very intense in nature and will remain on the lighter side.
Moreover, minimum temperatures are likely to rise by two to three degrees during next 48-72 hours. Thereafter, clouds will decrease, and weather conditions will improve. Day temperatures will settle around 29-30 degrees Celsius while minimums will hover around 21-23 degrees.
