The news that has come out now is in a month cruise terminal would be ready in Chennai port. It is now said that this would boost the status of Chennai as a holiday destination for cruise ships. Union shipping ministry has now offered special rates so that more tourist operators would be attracted.
In the month of April a cruise liner from United States of America would make use of this terminal at Chennai port.
According to an official belonging to Chennai port, cruise operators always prepare schedules 2 years before. The official also spoke about how the special rates or concession would create positive impact on the cruise operators. It is worthy to note that Mumbai port receives more than 50 vessels and Chennai port receives less than 10 vessels on an average.
The official further added that cruise terminal is a facility and passengers would spend lesser time. Mumbai port gets more traffic because of the fact that west coast is famous cruise circuit. It is now revealed that city’s tourism potential plays a huge role in increasing the cruise liner traffic.
One interesting point to note here is cruise terminal at the Chennai port would be first to be present on the east coast of India and cruise terminals in Mumbai, Mormugao, Kochi , Mangalore are different from Chennai terminal as the above said four terminals are on the western coast.
Ships from Middle East and from Europe are attracted by the cruise terminals present in the above four mentioned places. Being clean and neat these cruise terminals have got great advantage over the other regular docks. These cruise terminals also play their part in transportation arrangements of passengers to nearby tourist places.
A target of 700 vessels in a year might be possible in the future as the shipping industry is trying to increase cruise liner traffic to India by 10 times.
