On Monday the office of controller of examinations in Anna University announced the first semester exam results and it grabbed the attention of many.

The shocking news is over 56 percent of engineering students who took engineering mathematics examination in the first semester failed.

It must be noted that more than 1.13 lakh students from over 500 engineering colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu wrote the first semester examinations.

Compared to other subjects like engineering physics, engineering chemistry plus engineering graphics, communicative English etc the pass percentage in this engineering mathematics was very low and it was 43.6 %.

It must be noted that majority of the colleges recorded less than 50 % pass percentage as many students could not succeed in the engineering maths paper.

Applications of mathematical concepts are usually tough for the students and this engineering maths paper has got those in huge numbers.

Mr Jayaprakash A. Gandhi who is an educationist and career analyst spoke how students who depend on blueprint and book back questions fail to clear this engineering maths paper but those who have studied plus 1 subject are successful in clearing this engineering maths paper. It is now clear that compared to last year in this year 10 percent more number of students has failed.
