Established in the year 1957 Tamil Nadu Electricity Board or TNEB is a Tamil Nadu government based power generation and distribution company with many employees. The news that TNEB management has decided to give 2.57 per cent salary hike to all the employees working in this TNEB has been the talk of the town. This salary hike for all the employees of TNEB was decided inspite of some objection from Mr K. Shanmugam.

It must be noted that high level meeting recently held saw the presence of important personalities such as chief minster Mr E. Palaniswamy, deputy chief minister Mr O. Paneerselvam plus others like chief secretary Mrs. Girija Vaidyanathan and Mr K. Shanmugam who is the finance secretary. This meeting also saw the presence of representatives from TNEB.

It must not be forgotten that finance secretary had sent an advisory to TNEB management to abstain from sanctioning 2.57 percent wage hike demanded by the employees of TNEB.

According to a government official statement it is clear that this 2.57% salary hike was opposed by few. More over there were some thoughts that this hike might create more issues from the employees of transport department as they also wanted the same hike in their salaries.

It is important to mention that Mr Shamugam wanted the management of TNEB to implement two wage agreements one agreement for the workers and another agreement for the officers. The 2.57% hike in the salaries of all the employees belonging to TNEB would result in more salaries for them when compared with those of other government employees. It must be noted that this comes to 2.76% more salary.

According to Mr. Shanmugam similar to the government employees, the salaries of officers from the level of assistant audit officers to the level of chief financial controller must be increased only once in ten years.
