Roads are very important and many vehicles and public use these roads every day are well known. It is therefore necessary for the roads to be in good condition so that there won’t be any problem for the public.
The latest news is around 2589 roads would be restored soon as amount of Rs 230.52 crores have been sanctioned by Greater Chennai corporation. It is worthy to mention that roads have been damaged because of underground cable laying work plus also due to pipelines carried out by metro water. It is now revealed that amount from TURIF or Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund would be used in this process of road restoration.
An amount of Rs 238.49 crores has been sanctioned and as many as 2902 interior roads would be restored plus 15 bus route roads or BRR. According to a senior official it is very clear that work orders at cost of Rs 207.30 crores have been issued and it would be for 2574 interior roads plus 15 BRR.
It is important to note that an amount of Rs 23.22 crores would be utilised to redevelop footpaths along the 23 BRR. It is brought out by a senior official that these footpaths would be redeveloped as wider footpaths similar to those found in Egmore in Chennai.
For the sake of supervising the restoration work on these roads a third party consultant would be appointed by the corporation. It must be noted that amount of Rs 4.17 crores would be spent for this sake.
It is known that in the year 2015 heavy floods damaged the roads and this created huge issues for the public. It is now said that this is the first time renovation of the roads by the corporation would be done after the above mentioned floods. Metro water failed to issue NOC after their pipeline work was finished and as a result of this the roads have been in bad shape for long time now. Few interior roads would also be restored as these roads have not been re-laid for several years.
The official threw light on how the BRRs present in northern part of Chennai would be restored and he also hinted that certain roads places like Madhavaram and Manali would need a complete overhaul. It is now said that the grant from TURIF was very important and was a huge relief for the corporation. State government also played its part in advising this TURIF to grant funds and that is superb.
In the month of October in 2017 tenders were called for and in the month of December in 2017 bids were opened. Just last month work orders were issued in this regard due to scrutiny that was needed on the bids. According to a source raw material price plus cost of labour and transportation charges have all increased from the time these estimates were prepared.
It is worthy to mention that all the bids exceeded project estimate by 10 percent to 12 percent and this was confirmed by an official.
