Incomplete underground drainage system in Avadi is an issue now

Avadi in Chennai is very important place and is now making news. It must be noted that the households in this Avadi in Chennai did not receive sewerage system till now.

It must not be forgotten that in 2017 counsel for Avadi municipality told Madras High Court that 95 percent of underground drainage system or UGD work has been completed but till now houses in Avadi are facing problem in this regard.

Lack of functional sewerage system has been a huge issue for the residents in this place and this has been for a decade now. It is now said that many complaints made by these residents of Avadi has been falling on deaf ears of the authorities concerned. One important piece of information is as many as 42000 households along 48 wards are facing problems regarding this UGD and that in spite of paid connection plus road cutting fees.

It was in the year 2009 that underground drainage system work was first started and it was to provide sewers for as many as 3400 streets. It is sad to mention that some streets have missed out on this underground drainage system and it was confirmed by some residents of this locality.

Mr Roy Rozario who is a resident of this place shared his thoughts and was not happy regarding this underground drainage system works. Opinions of the municipality and members of the office differed regarding the completion of work on sewerage lines.

It is said that the sewerage and distribution lines have been laid plus work regarding manholes and lifting stations is completed and work on one of the two sewerage treatment plants or STP is going on. This was confirmed by the municipal officials.

Mr C. Mathivannan commissioner spoke about how 90 percent of work has been completed successfully and how work on 36 MLD STP in Paruthipaatu has been taken up.
