The state government of Tamil Nadu has approved the proposal to distribute the ration items through the biometric (fingerprint registration) system. Accordingly, the state department of food has decided to implement this system from the month of June.
An official of the department explained that the state government has officially approved the proposal to install biometric devices in the ration shops and sell the ration items through this system.
Accordingly, a tender will be floated on the internet shortly for the procurement of biometric devices for the ration shops at a cost of Rs. 34 Crores. A special team will be set up to supervise and execute the tender proceedings.
The details of the ration card holders’ Aadhar card details have been obtained for the manufacture of smart ration card. However, once the biometric device is installed, once the family-head or any member visits the ration shop, their fingerprints will be taken and registered. If the fingerprint registered in the biometric device agrees with the fingerprint in the Aadhar card, the required grocery items would be sold.
So, there will not be any need to bring the ration card to the ration shop henceforth. So, the items can be bought only those are officially checked ok. Training to the ration shop staff will be given in this regard during April and May.
Once the training is completed, the activities will be expedited in order to implement the new biometric operated sales from the month of June.
