Safety guidelines for school buses reissued by the school department

Many students travel by school buses is known. Sometimes travelling in these school buses is not safe for the students as school buses get involved in many accidents. This creates lots of issues for the parents and they find it very difficult.

The good news now is regarding the regulation and control of school buses under Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Act, the department of school education reissued safety guidelines on Friday 9th March 2018.

It is worthy to note that there were many accidents in the recent years and as a result the students have lost their precious lives. In the year 2012 a class two girl student Shruthi died after she fell down through a hole on the floor in the school bus. This death of a young school student sent shock waves is known.  At that time a special set of rules were issued for the sake of safety of students.

Another shocking incident took place recently near Pudupakkam where a 20 year old student of a famous college slipped through the floor of the college bus as the bus tyre burst.

It is now said that according to the norms trained attendants for the children must be present in the bus and it is very important that this attendant has got conductors license. Presence of first aid box plus fire extinguisher must be compulsory in the buses and schools must make sure that these are available for the students.  Another point to note is the footboard in the buses must not exceed 250 mm from the ground and non-slip threads must be fitted.

According to the safety guidelines drivers of these school buses must have atleast 5 years of experience of driving a vehicle of similar type plus they must have undergone a skill test. Drivers of these buses must also have a log book with them.
