Greater Chennai Corporation has been doing many superb things these days. It is now said that corporation of Chennai has been imposing penalty or fine on those who litter in public.
It is worthy to mention here that in the year 2017 Chennai city ranked low in the Swachh Sarvekshan rankings. A huge amount of Rs 41.75 lakh was collected by the civic body from the people as these people created problems by littering in the public.
According to Mr. Mahesan, who is Chennai corporation chief engineer and in-charge of solid waste management, penalty or fine was collected during the period between 1st of January 2017 and 31st of January 2018.
It must be noted that in the Swachh Bharat awareness programme Mr. Mahesan spoke about the above mentioned penalty to the students who took part.
Amount of Rs 100 has been collected from the people who are involved in this littering in the public and this was confirmed by Mr. Mahesan.
Mr. Mahesan surprised the students when he mentioned about how in Chennai city everyday as much as 5500 tonnes of garbage is being generated and out of that 30 % are plastic wastes.
This in-charge of solid waste management spoke about the accumulation of the plastic bags as people buy plastic bags from the shops. He further threw light on how the accumulation of plastic bags would cause damage to the surrounding environment.
Mr. Mahesan astonished many when he spoke about corporation of Chennai building as many as 5979 individual toilets and as many as 1003 community toilets under Swachh Bharat mission. He spoke about how open defecation has been restricted in Chennai city.
One sensational piece of news is soon the city of Chennai would be declared by the central government as open defecation free.
It is now revealed that civic body has destroyed 1850 toilets connected directly to city rivers and also modified 3900 such toilets.
