Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been witnessing moderate to heavy rains for the past few days. In fact, few places even recorded very heavy spells. However, rain intensity over Kerala and Tamil Nadu has decreased during the last 24 hours.

However, some areas in Kerala and Tamil Nadu still managed to record scattered light rains. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu recorded 5.7 mm rain, Coonor 2.8 mm, Salem 2.7 mm, Tiruchirappalli 2 mm and Tondi 0.5 mm. In the same time frame, Kochi Airport recorded 0.8 mm rain, Kochi city observatory 0.4 mm, Kannur 0.1 mm and Kottayam 0.2 mm.

This decrease in rainfall activity can be attributed to the weakening of the Well-Marked Low-Pressure area which was prevailing in the Arabian Sea. The system has moved away furthermore from Tamil Nadu and Kerala towards South Coastal Karnataka.

As per weathermen, a trough is extending up to interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, we expect good pre Monsoon rains over interior Tamil Nadu and Kerala for another 24 to 36 hours. However, the intensity of rain will be less over the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, there will be a significant relief from the ongoing warm weather conditions. The state capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai is also expected to receive light to moderate showers in the next 24 hours.

Places such as Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and Namakkal are likely to witness rains. Alapuzha, Kozhikode, Kannur, Thrissur, and Palakkad in Kerala will record light showers.

These rains will be mostly scattered and are likely to continue until March 18. Thereafter, the intensity will reduce significantly and the weather will become almost dry over most parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Thus, the temperature profile will once again witness a rising trend.
