Reliable sources from the Railways circle inform that a detailed report is being prepared to hand over the Chennai MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) to the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd authorities.
MRTS operates from Chennai Beach to Velachery. This covers a distance of 20 km.
In case the MRTS administration is handed over the Chennai Metro Rail, all the railway stations in the MRTS will be renovated. As these Railway Stations in MRTS route have a lot of space to spare, arrangements may be made to set up shops and restaurants thus earning revenue while attracting the passengers.
Around 80000 passengers use the MRTS daily. After the recent hike in bus fares, the number of passengers has gone up by 20%.
The 1st Phase of activities required to hand over MRTS upkeep to private agencies have been completed and a detailed report has been prepared.
Southern Railway General manager Kulshreshta had visited the Headquarters of the Chennai Metro at Koyambedu and held discussions with the Managing Director of the Chennai Metro, Pankajkumar Bansal.
After further phases of discussions, a final detailed report is to be prepared based on which the decision to hand over the MRTS operations to the Chennai Metro Rail authorities will be taken.
