The Indian railways have planned to attract more customers/passengers by reducing the ticket fares for Shatabdi express operated on certain routes.

Presently, Shatabdi express trains are being operated in 45 different routes.

Out of this, the number of passengers utilizing this facility is rather less in some of the routes. Based on a survey and analysis for this, it was established that costlier ticket fare was one of the major reasons for the lesser number of passengers.

Subsequently, on a trial basis, the ticket fares for 2 of the Shatabdi Express trains were reduced. After this, it was recorded that there was an increase in the number of passengers by 65% and the revenues went up by 17%,

Following this successful trial, Railways have planned to reduce the ticket fares in 25 more Shatabdi Express trains.

The senior Railway officials explained in this regard:

‘The ticket fares for 2 Shatabdi Express trains – Delhi-Ajmeer and Chennai-Mysuru routes – were reduced on a trial basis last year. In the Chennai-Mysore Shatabdi Express, the number of passengers in the Mysuru-Bengaluru section was very less. However, once the ticket was reduced, there was an appreciable increase in the number of passengers by 65%.

In a similar operation, the ticket fare for the section between Jaipur-Ajmeer in the Shatabdi Express train Delhi-Ajmeer was reduced.

Further, a decision has been taken to reduce the ticket fares in 25 more Shatabdi trains. This will be implemented shortly.’
