There is always a link between summers in Chennai and shortage of drinking water supply. Now a piece of news has come out and that news would certainly delight the residents of the city of Chennai.

The summer season is now on and it is now said that this summer there would not be any shortage in the drinking water.

According to Mr S.P. Velumani local administration minister, till the month of December there would be Chennai metro water supply. It is worthy to mention that this minister reviewed the status of drinking water storage levels in all the municipal corporations plus in all the municipal areas in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The minister spoke about how there were many efforts taking place to tap the fresh water resource from the polluted Porur Lake. He further spoke about how the river banks are identified for the sake of future drinking water needs.

He highlighted that there would be good monsoon rainfall in the month of October 2018 and state was expecting that.  Minister Velumani threw light on how state government has been coordinating with Andhra so that 8 tmc of Krishna water due to Chennai would be got.

The state has stored 4.24 tmc ft of water in the reservoirs supplying water to Chennai city in the next 3 months. This was also confirmed by the minister for local administration.  It is known that as many as four reservoirs supply water to Chennai city and all these four reservoirs were spruced up and their inlets were cleared. The main purpose was to get the storm water. Old damaged Shutters were replaced plus many new pipes were laid and these were done to prevent the loss of drinking water.

To tap the groundwater as many as 15 new bore wells would be making their presence felt soon. These new bore wells would be present along the Kosathalayar river basin and the Neyveli plains.

One important piece of information is from the Sikkarayapuram quarries tapping of water would be continued and every day 30 mld of water would be tapped.

Residents of Chennai get 650 mld water and in the worst scenario the water level would be maintained at 600 mld up to the month of December. This was also confirmed by the minister.

In the rural areas many overhead tanks would soon be built so that supply of safe drinking water is got. Steps regarding this are going on.
