The Chennai Metro Rail Project was conceived and implemented basically in order to reduce the severe traffic congestions in the Chennai Metro City.

In the 1st Phase, the Chennai Metro started services from Koyambedu to Alandur. Presently, Chennai Metro Rail services are also available from Koyambedu to Nehru Park.

The fares for the Metro Rail travel are from Rs. 10 to Rs. 70. The Metro Rail passengers have the offer for travel cards.

Travel cards will be given while buying the ticket. An additional fare of Rs. 10 was charged as the deposit amount for the issue of the travel card.

After using the card for the 1st travel, the passenger has the option to retain the card, recharge the same, and use for further travels in the Chennai Metro Rail.

In case, the passenger does not want to retain the travel card, he/she can surrender the travel card and get the refund of the deposit amount of Rs. 10.

Now, the deposit amount for this travel card has been increased to Rs. 50. It is a well-known fact that the public already has a complaint that the Metro Rail fares are costlier. However, the crowd levels have not been to the expected levels.

At present, the travel card deposit amount has been increased to Rs. 50. The manufacturing of each travel card is Rs. 63. Earlier, a deposit of Rs. 10 was being collected as the deposit expecting the passenger to utilize the same for subsequent frequent travel.

However, as the passengers did not show priority for using the travel card for further use, a loss was encountered by the Chennai Metro Rail. Because of this, the deposit amount for the travel card had to be increased to Rs. 50.

An official explained that the initial deposit of Rs. 10 was made in order to attract more passengers. But this deposit amount could not be considered permanent.
