People travelling by metro rail in Chennai city has been on the rise in the recent times. It is now predicted that by the year 2045 as many as 32.7lakh commuters would be travelling by this metro rail every day. Fantastic isnt it!!
Presently Tamil Nadu government is waiting for the approval from the centre for phase 2 CMRL project is known. This above prediction by the authorities belonging to CMRL has surprised many and is now spoken in high esteem.
It is worthy to mention here that this phase 2 CMRL project would provide a link between northern suburbs with IT hub along OMR and Porur through important places like Mylapore, Adyar, Virugambakkam and Koyambedu etc.
As many as 116 stations would be present in this and it would cost humongous amount of Rs 85,047 crores. In this stretch nearly 80 new trains would be making their presence felt.
It has been calculated by CMRL that around 23000 commuters would have to board trains running in one direction in hour. This would be in the corridor 3 between Madhavaram and SIPCOT in Siruseri.
A maximum of 17000 passengers would have to travel per hour in the corridor 4 between CMBT and Light House. In the corridor 5 between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur more than 27000 passengers would have to travel per hour. To connect more areas, corridor four would be extended till Poonamallee.
By the year 2024 in corridor 3 more than 15000 commuters would be boarding trains in single direction in one hour. In six years of time, corridor 3 would be completed as it would be constructed first. This was confirmed by none other than MD metro rail Mr. Pankaj Kumar Bansal. It is now revealed that in the 45km phase 1 average of 30000 passengers are using metro rail. This is 10 percent lower than what it was projected in the past.
Questions about poor patronage were raised by the centre and this centre is processing DPR of phase 2. The projected ridership for the 45km line was 7.76lakh but actual ridership is just 30000. Delay in the opening of major stretches in Anna Salai and Central is now cited as the reason for poor patronage. This was confirmed in the latter by ministry of housing and urban affairs.
Better connectivity across Chennai city would be achieved once phase 2 becomes functioning and this would make CMRL to achieve their projections.
