As the intensity of heat keeps rising in the summer in the neighbouring states, the arrival of vegetables has reduced in quantity. This has led to an increase in the prices of the vegetables.
As of yesterday, the details of prices of vegetables in Rs. per kg in the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market:
Beans 40, broad beans 25, ladys finger (okra) and bitter gourd 20, beetroot 15, green chilli 14, snake gourd 12, tomato 10, onion 13, sambar (small) onion 30, brinjal 15, potato 22, radish 12, cabbage 7, carrot 16, and drumstick 18.
In this regard, the Koyambedu Vegetable Traders Association members explained that with the increasing heat intensity and summer rains, the arrival of vegetables has reduced in quantity. Whenever there is such shortfall in the arrival quantity, the prices of the vegetables trend to increase.
