Complaints have been received that the State Department of Food has been delaying the implementation of the plan to record the fingerprints of the ration card holders in the biometric equipment and then distribute the ration items.
There are some maloperations regularly practised in the Tamil Nadu Ration shops on the distribution of the ration items. In order to prevent this, the system of selling the ration items only to the card holders with recorded fingerprints was decided by the state Department of Food. It was then decided to implement the system from the month of June. However, it seems that some sections are blocking this initiative.
An official from the cooperatives and food department explained in this regard:
The central government has categorically informed that rice will be given at the subsidised rates only if the rice and other ration items are distributed only through the biometric system. So, no one can block this implementation. As the biometric system adapts the latest technology, it required a series of discussions with the related experts for the implementation. Now, this is completed.
Hence, the task of procuring the biometric equipment will be taken up immediately. It is planned that ration items will be distributed only after the fingerprint registration from the month of August.
