New colleges to benefit students from villages

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Selvi J. Jayalalitha has announced funding of Rs. 317.8 crores to open 2 engineering and 10 polytechnic colleges. An official press release said that this initiative is a bid to encourage students to take up higher education and lower the dropout rate after school. The colleges are part of a government sanction to extend educational facilities to students from villages. The colleges will have courses in science, engineering, medicine and arts.

The Government has set aside Rs. 80-170 crores to build state-of-the-art facilities including buildings, equipment, furniture, appointment of teachers, student accommodation, libraries and laboratories.

The 10 polytechnic institutes will set up in Srirangam in Tiruchirapalli district, Kandarvakkottai in Pudukottai district, Sankarapuram in Villupuram district, Perunthurai in Erode district, Ariyalur, Uthankarai in Krishnagiri district, Jolarpet in Vellore district, Usilampatti and Senkkanurani in Madurai district and Andipatti in Theni district.
