Following the death of the son of a top minister due to a badly designed speed breaker, the Chennai Corporation and Traffic Police took to many meetings and discussions to correct the issue. However, the installation of new rubber speed breakers in the city are, once again, in violation of all rules.
Chennai is found have the maximum traffic fatalities in the country. This is more reason for the Corporation to look into the matter. Speed breakers, dubbed ‘back breakers’, in the city are one-tenth of the width as per Indian Road Congress norms (they should have a width of a minimum of 3.7 metres), there should be warning of the coming speed breaker at least 40 metres before it (followed in some places) and all speed breakers are to be painted black and white so that motorists can see it in advance (again not consistently followed).
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. Vikram Kapur feels that these have been built on the local level and has promised to make corrections.
