Multi-level car parking at Chennai airport

Total capacity of 2000 vehicles accommodation with an area of one million square feet of space is the latest infrastructural development of Chennai airport that will be opened for the public use after its completion. This whole parking facility project comes to an estimation of Rs 250 crore and additionally a mall has been planned to build around the parking lot for a 2.5 lakh square feet of area.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) outsourced the project to Olympia group while Larsen and Toubro (L&T) will look after the construction of the site. Reports from L&T states the construction will be carried on at both ends of the Airport metro rail station making certain correctional measures with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The total structure of the building will have six levels and a length of 27 meters.

The total time required for completing the parking facility project was reported as 18 months by AAI officials. They also mentioned about the passengers facing inconvenience in the coming days as the construction process will be commenced very soon. After the completion the pathways near the parking will be free from disturbances. The construction of a mall was planned for the revenue generation said one of the official of AAI.

Existing parking lot of Chennai Airport can accommodate up to 1200 cars at a given time. Now the new construction will hold more number of vehicles and expected to meet the ends till the year 2030. The plan for the extended parking lot construction was proposed in the year 2010 itself and not escalated due to several reasons. Now the commencement of the project was categorized under the airport’s phase 2 modernization project.

Reports from AAI confirms the increase of passengers in the upcoming years from 18 million current count to 30 million. The Mall was constructed with a business strategy to attract people from the surrounding areas such as Adambakkam, Alandur, Nanganalur, Tirisulam, pallavaram, Pazhavanthangal and Meenambakkam.

L&T produced the construction plan of new airport terminals to several government authorizations. After approval the construction process will be started as soon as possible said the official report of the company. Also the Kamaraj Domestic Terminal was demolished as the initial process of terminal construction. Within three years of time the whole construction will be finished and opened for public said the Airport Authority of India, Chennai.
