In spite of strong oppositions from the residents and traders the authorities increased the prices of the toll passing. Government didn’t take any kind of steps to rectify the actual public problem but allowing the road maintenance authorities to charge more money from public for a period of two years.
According to the latest press release by Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC), cars will have to pay Rs. 27 (Old rate: Rs. 25), LVCs would be charged Rs. 45 (Old rate: Rs. 41), Buses Rs. 71 (Old rate: Rs. 65), Truck Rs. 107 (Old rate: Rs. 97) and Multi axle vehicle Rs. 213 (Old rate: Rs. 194) for a single trip.
The recent increase in fuel prices followed by the toll rate increase will directly affect the trade resulting in increase of commodities. So all the effects of these hikes will be recovered from the customers by the traders. In all possible ways the current situation of road transport acts against the goodwill of the general citizens of the nation.
Call taxis operating in these roads charges extra money from the customers owing to the sudden increase of toll rates. Since the Call taxi companies are unable to find the profitable margin credited the high fuel prices and toll rates they charge more from their customers. TNRDC permitted the private road maintenance authorities to collect toll fee from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2036 as per the government order.
Many opposition political parties and general public are raising their voices against the toll rate collection and on the contrary the government is in total favor of toll booth authorities.
