On Monday, 2nd July 2018, minister for labour and employment, Nilofer Khafeel, grabbed many eyeballs when she announced that as many as 2 lakh youth would be given training in skill development in the current financial year. She also spoke about how amount of Rs 200 crores would be spent for this training of the youths.
She later highlighted that according to Vision 2023, 2 crore youths have to be given training for skill development. Till now as many as 479,061 youths have received training from as many as 629 skill development institutes. As many as 105,442 youths received training through the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation in the last year alone and in this year 2 lakh youths would receive training.
The minister for labour and employment threw light on how under the prime minister’s ‘Kaushal Vikas Yojana’ 46,960 persons get trained every year in skill development and how an amount of Rs 206.6 crores is being spent for this purpose. With the assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency, a high skill development scheme would be implemented and an amount of Rs 100 crores would be spent on this. At a cost of Rs 564.84 crores, a centre of excellence for skill development training centres is being set up in association with a German based firm Siemens and Designtech.
For those who have finished their training course in ITIs, a mobile app would be created to help them out. Calls for maintenance plus repair works would be received by this app and these ITI students could attend these works. The minister explained how this would be highly beneficial for the ITI students as it would make the students to launch their own self employment initiative in the future.
For those construction workers who die at the work sites, an amount of Rs 5 lakhs is being given and this amount would also be given to those who get injured at the work places and later die in the hospital.
From the current Rs 2000, the assistance for the final rights for the members of the TN Workers Welfare Board would be increased to Rs 5000 and this was confirmed by the minister Nilofer Khafeel.
