The latest news is the state government has given orders to start English medium sections in the government aided schools in TN. In 1990-91, the government of TN allowed government aided schools under the private management to open English medium sections for higher secondary and high class students studying under self-financing stream. Those students who were studying in aided sections were not given this option is known. It must not be forgotten that in 2008-09 the method of collecting special fees from the English medium students was removed. An amount of Rs 250 to Rs 500 per year was collected as tuition fees.

It is important to note that In 2012-13, in selected government schools located in rural places, English medium sections would be started was announced by the state government. As many as 22400 students from 320 schools were enrolled in these English medium sections. This increased slowly as more and more students opted for English medium. The amazing piece of information is presently as many as 6.6 lakh students study in English medium in TN. To reduce the migration of the students to private matriculation schools, the state school education department has decided to extend the benefit to aided schools also.

It must be noted that in the order dated 20th July, the government has framed admission guideline and restricted the aided schools in starting English medium sections freshly again. These aided schools were allowed to divide the present Tamil medium sections into two.

It is said that after the division the ratio of English medium and Tamil medium students in a school should be 50:50. Additional fees should not be collected from those students who are studying in the English medium. There are few experts who believe that this order would have positive impact on the aided schools managed by the government itself.

A retired aided school teacher Mr. Annamalai spoke his heart out. According to him most aided schools managed by private managements already have English medium classes in their own schools. Administrations is carried out either by using money from their own pockets or by the funds allotted to Tamil medium sections.

All DEEO’s or District Elementary Education Officers were instructed by the state school education secretary, Mr. Pradeep Yadav, to inspect the aided schools. This inspection is mainly done to verify whether aided schools have sufficient number of teachers to handle English medium sections. The inspection would also verify the necessary facilities present in the schools before giving permission to admit the students.
