It is known that a 5 km 4th broad gauge railway line from Thiruvottriyur and Korukkupet was newly laid to ease the service of express trains and EMU locals that regularly suffer detention at Thiruvottriyur. The latest news that has emerged out is this newly laid fourth line would be inspected on 28th of July 2018. The commissioner of railway safety, southern circle, Bangalore, Mr. K.A. Manoharan would inspect this fourth line on the above mentioned date.

As per the statement from the department of railways it is clear that a high speed trial run between Thiruvottriyur and Korukkupet would be conducted by the competent authority of rail safety. This inspection would take place between 2pm and 5pm on 28th of July 2018. An official belonging to railways hinted that after the completion of the inspection then this section would be opened for traffic and there would be few statutory procedures. It is worthy to mention that in southern railway, this Chennai-Athipattu- Gummidipoondi- Gudur section is one of the busiest stretches. In this route many suburban trains plus passenger trains, express trains and goods trains travel. For the sake of green signal, the trains had to compete with each other in both the directions. At present, the trains from New Delhi, Howrah and Hyderabad are given top priority and this is followed by the goods trains.

The railways proposed to develop 21.5km 3rd and 4th tracks between Chennai Beach and Athipattu at a cost of Rs 150 crores. This was mainly to cater to the additional demands. This project did not take off as expected due to land acquisition issue. The railways have taken up additional track laying works in the Korukkupet-Athipattu sections as the work in the Chennai beach- Korukkupet section did not progress.

In the month of October in 2014, third line between Korukkupet and Athipattu was opened for public and in the year 2016 the fourth line in Athipattu-Ennore-Thiruvottiyur section was also opened. Now there would be four lines in the Korukkupet-Athipattu section and the works regarding third line between Chennai Beach-Korukkupet would soon start. This was confirmed by a railway source.
