As a move to save electricity and expenses the lighting systems of trains under Chennai Metro Rail Limited are to be changed. At present, these trains are being lit using CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), and these are to get replaced using LED light strips. The LED lights will be installed along the train ceiling.
Comparing the power consumption of the two, CFL needs 3.7 KW per hour whereas LED strips need only 185 KW per hour. Counting on the numbers, there is a total of 100 CFL lamps in each and every metro train.
Though it may look like a very small initiative, counting on the expenses for about 5 years, it can contribute to huge saving in terms of cost spent towards electricity because the sum spent towards LED will be Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 40,000 KW while it will be whopping Rs 6,00,000 or 82,000 KW with CFL. CMRL officials add that they have been working out on this project for many months now.
For the first phase of the project, 42 trains are ordered and 25 of them are now functional. In the following months, LED strip installation shall be carried out in phases. Furthermore, to note, these LED strips will have a lifetime of 11 years.
