Ever since the beginning of August, Chennai has been receiving isolated light rains. However, on one or two occasions, the city has also received some moderate spells. On the last day as well, some light rains occurred over the capital of Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Chennai’s Nungambakkam Observatory recorded 3 mm of rains, meanwhile, Minambakkam Observatory witnessed 1 mm of Monsoon showers.

Chennai, as well as most parts of Tamil Nadu, comes under a rain shadow area during Southwest Monsoon and thus, the city does not experience heavy showers during Monsoon. Which is why, the average monthly rainfall of the city is also low, standing at 126.8 mm.

Counting on these light spells, till date, the city has already recorded a total of 64.3  mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, Chennai usually receives rains when there is any significant weather system brewing in the Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast. However, since the arrival of Southwest Monsoon, no such weather system has formed over Tamil Nadu coast which would have given good rains over the city.

As per Skymet Weather, now, a trough is running from the low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal to South Andhra Pradesh coast. As Chennai is in the vicinity of this trough, thus we expect scattered rains to occur over the city during the next 2 days.

One or two places may also witness moderate spells. However, like before, the intensity of these rains would not be heavy and widespread. After two days, chances of rains would reduce further over the city and the weather would become warm and humid again.
