Chennai residents would have come across many sodium vapour lamps and many cement poles in various places in the city. Soon this would be a thing of past. The latest news is the Chennai city would become brighter than before and at a low cost. To replace the 70,000 sodium vapour lamps and 17000 cement poles with LED lights, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has come up with 2 proposals for an amount of Rs 220 crores. The main advantage of this is GCC would be able to save Rs 30 crores annually. By the month of February, this project would be completed and this was confirmed by the officials of GCC.
Under the Chennai mega city development mission from the year 2011 till 2015, 1.85lakhs of 2.77lakh street lights have been replaced with LED lights. This was confirmed by an official belonging to GCC. The official later spoke about how 70,000 street lights would also be replaced by LED lights by the end of January and capital grant of Rs 140 crores would be used. He threw light on how new LED lights would be erected on the interior roads and how the distance between the poles would be as per the prescribed norms.
It is brought out that till now in the 8 newly added areas more than 7000 cement and concrete lamp posts were replaced by LED lights. The official spoke about how in areas like Thiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur there were no lamp posts and the tube lights were erected on the cement posts. Setting up of iron posts to erect new LED street lights is important and cables for this would be present underground. Every month amount of Rs 1.5 crores has been saved on power bills by the corporation now and the amount of money saved would be twice once the project is completed. Soon Chennai would become first metro in India with LED lights as the work would be completed by February 2019 itself. Hyderabad and few other cities are also setting up LED lights is known.
Mr. Balakrishnan, secretary of TANSI Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association hoped that the interior roads would be included in this project.
