Besant Nagar is a superb residential locality in the Chennai city. The Elliot’s beach present in this place has been attracting many locals and people from abroad countries make it a point to visit this spectacular beach whenever they visit India. It is known that the beach was named after Edward Elliot and this popular Elliot’s Beach is now making great news.
It is important to mention that every weekend the visitors usually would be seen in huge numbers in the southern portion of this beach. On Sunday, 9th September 2018 this portion was not filled with the people. Many school, college students plus other volunteers made their presence felt in this Elliot’s beach yesterday. It was not for any enjoyment purpose but for a good cause. These people were involved in the cleaning of the beach and this cleaning process went for couple of hours.
This cleaning programme was conducted jointly by the Consulate General of United States plus by the Indian Maritime Foundation and Environmentalist Foundation of India. Consul General, Mr. Robert Burgess spoke about how as a part of the international coastal clean-up drive, this programme was flagged off by the US consulate general in Chennai.
The presence of plastic waste along the beach has been a global issue and the plastic has been found on the guts of fishes present in the San Francisco bay. This was confirmed by Jenna R. Jambeck who is an associate professor of University of Georgia. She later explained about the need to have a solid waste management plan with the necessary infrastructure so that the issue would be solved. This associate professor later highlighted how many cities in USA have set an example with their integrated waste management programmes. She cited the examples of Seattle and San Francisco on the west coast and Boston on the east coast.
