The river sand is of huge demand in Tamil Nadu is well known. In the past the government had announced that the river sand would be imported from abroad to balance the demand and supply. CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Association struggled to find a suitable bidder.
The news that has now come out is PWD or Public Works Department (sand mining wing) has given assurance that by the end of this month of September river sand would be imported from abroad. The sand would reach the Chennai port in the first phase and this was confirmed by the officials. This move by the PWD is appreciated by many builders now.
According to Mr. Ramprabhu who is the vice-chairman, Southern Builders Association of India, the officials have delayed the process of sand mining and there should not be any further delay in this.
It is clear that importing the river sand would be tremendous and would have positive effect for both builders as well as for the public. This importing of river sand from abroad has come at the time when there is a growing demand for M-sand. An official belonging to sand mining wing expressed his thoughts about the importing of river sand. He spoke about how all the procedures about the importing of river sand from abroad have been followed and how by the end of September month the river sand would reach Chennai. The official later hinted that Chennai port would be the first where the sand would be imported. After the import, the possibility of the price of the river sand would get reduced.
Checking the quality of the river sand is very important and PWD would be setting up a quality checking team. In the next 2 years the government has decided to import 30lakh tonnes of river sand. For receiving the sand from foreign nations, the ports of Ennore, Kattupalli and Thoothukudi have been identified.
