Food stalls at CMBT in Koyambedu charge high prices, commuters affected

At Koyambedu in Chennai is present the second biggest bus depot in India and many people board buses to reach their places of destination from this CMBT or Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus. It is also the largest bus terminus in Asia. There are many food stalls present in this CMBT in Chennai is known. The latest news is these food stalls sell food items at high prices without issuing bills.

It is now said that the labour department officials would take strict action against those vendors who charge high rates for the food items. It is known that CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority maintains these food stalls in CMBT. This CMDA would also keep a check on those vendors who violate rules and charge exorbitant prices from the commuters. It was confirmed by the sources that there are as many as 200 food stalls present in CMBT. These shops sell food, water bottles plus other requirements for the commuters. The shocking piece of news is there are no boards kept in these shops to indicate the prices of the food items. The vendors do not issue bills for the food items. A tea stall owner present outside CMBT expressed his thoughts and spoke about how many people come to CMBT with the feeling of having food present in the food stalls before boarding their buses. The prices of the food items in these stalls are so huge that these commuters go outside CMBT to have food.

An employee working in a private firm spoke his heart out on few things. He spoke about how many passengers urge the government to establish Amma canteen inside the premises of CMBT. He then spoke about how the officials played their part in privatization of the CMBT premises. He threw light on how the vendors do not issue bills for the food items and how this has been creating many issues for the commuters. He also wanted the higher officials to look into this issue. A superintending engineer of CMDA (CMBT) spoke about how their department was insisting the vendors to put boards to indicate the prices of the food items.

This engineer later revealed that action was taken against some vendors who did not conform to the guidelines. He also added that inspection of such shops inside the CMBT would be carried out by his department staffs. Commissioner of labour, Dr. R. Nandagopal, spoke about how the commuters could complaint about overpricing of food items and other commodities in CMBT.

He later explained the importance of LMCTS or Legal Metrology Complaint Tracking System and said this LMCTS could be downloaded in the smartphones. He added that the person who gives complaints must fill the details like shop name, place and type of complaints etc. He highlighted how the team belonging to the labour department would rush to the spot. He finally spoke about how depending on the complaint, the team belonging to the labour department could even seal those shops that violate the rules.
