For children afflicted by profound hearing loss, sound seems like a closed door which they long to open and opportunities for a better quality of life seem distant. But a cochlear implant surgery followed by a rigorous rehabilitation programme, offer hope.
The heart touching story of little Ayush who was born with profound hearing loss since birth, still assures our hope on medical miracles. Now he is 2.6 years old residing in Chhattisgarh. This special child could not speak like other normal children or even utter basic words like ‘Mummy – Papa’ which children usually speak in their initial days. His parents were very much worried over the condition of their child and were looking out at various options to overcome this but at the same time couldn’t find any luck in any of the available solutions.
Ayush was also suffering from a kidney disease, due to which the couple have been travelling to various cities across India to visit the best of best doctors, hoping that their child could recover soon. The most disheartening part for them was their son couldn’t express the basic ailment he was suffering from, this made them worry even more about his future.
Fortunately, at that point of time they came to meet Yash, a 11-year-old boy, who was Dr. Sheelu Srinivas’s implantee. Though the parents had heard about cochlear implant earlier, they were very much sceptical about the outcomes. Ayush parents were also financially burdened due to the medical expenses of the kidney treatment and were worried whether cochlear implant could make any positive impact on their child. But looking at Yash leading normal life, like any other children, Ayush parents gained confidence and travelled all the way to Bangalore from Chhattisgarh for a cochlear implant surgery, only to gain their losing hope.
They visited Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road and met Dr. Sheelu Srinivas. After several examinations, Dr. Sheelu and team started with bilateral hearing aids and speech therapy. The parents were yet doubtful at this stage, whether the child could speak. But after 3 months of regular therapy Ayush started vocalizing sounds, which gave the family the confidence that their son will be able to speak after cochlear implantation.
Finally, Dr. Sheelu Srinivas and team to achieve the age appropriate speech and language milestone, they decided to go ahead with cochlear implantation surgery.
Now it’s been 5 months since the cochlear implant therapy was done, and Ayush has achieved beyond expectations. He has already started speaking phrases and trying to frame simple sentences. At this tender age, he unlike other children had to go through so much, embarks a great journey from an impairment to recovering back to normalcy.
The family is very happy with their decision of consulting Dr. Sheelu Srinivas at Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road. The parents had left all hope that their son could ever speak in life, and now looking at their son trying to speak they are heart fully very thankful to Columbia Asia Hospitals and the team of doctors.
