Most people build/construct. Do the interior designs as per their own preference without considering the others - especially, the senior citizens in the family.

In the present lifestyle, many senior citizens live an isolated life without company.  However, if some modifications are done in the house, the senior citizens can spend their time in a natural environment and in peace.

While thinking and discussing this aspect, some worthwhile points emerged:

  • The bathrooms must be maintained proper – spick and span – when senior citizens live along with the family.  It must be ensured that the flooring is not slippery. It is better to avoid super-smooth tiles, Rough or matt-finish tiles will be ideal.
  • In case the senior citizens are living alone on their own without any company, it is preferable for them to live in multi-storeyed apartments rather than individual houses. The possibility is high for help-at-hand if required in the nieghbours. They can opt for the ground floor or the 1st floor.
  • If they live isolated, it is also preferable that the house is not too big. It should answer all necessities. They cannot keep the house cleaning regularly. If the house is smaller, it is easier and quicker to clean The switchboards can be kept at chest-level. It would be cumbersome if they are located higher for them to reach.
  • Grilled doors must be fitted both in the front entrance and back entrance of the house. This will ensure better safety.
  • It is better to install western toilets in their bedroom as they are more convenient. SoIt would be better to fix handrails along the toilet walls to enable them to get up or move around in the bathroom.
  • Another important feature is that the entrances must have to facility to move wheel-chairs in without any difficulty.
  • Even when residing in a rented place, discuss with the house owner and carry out the modifications at the lowest possible cost – keeping the all-important safety of the senior citizens!
