Child Rights and You (CRY) will be organizing its annual soccer tournament ‘ShankaraBuildpro CRY Soccer for Child Rights’ with an emphasis to encourage children to take up education along withsports. Sport has played an integral role in ensuring a much greater participation of girls and boys alike in education, improving the numbers of children going to school drastically over the last 5 years in the intervention area of CRY at Vyasarpadi. The event will be organized on October 7, 2018 at the YMCA Nandanam A-Ground, Chennai.

CRY in association with Vyasarpadi Children’s Empowerment Project covers 6 slums and 2061 children. To further elucidate, this year 212 number of children from class 10 appeared for the board exams and all of them passed and moved to the 11th standard, whereas for class 12, 76 children appeared for the exams and 74 of them passed. What has been most heartwarming is, almost every child moved to higher studies having recorded almost hundred percent enrollment and pass out for both class 10 and 12 standard.

The children of Vysarpadi are scripting a new beginning. The world is an oyster for those who dream and these children have dared to be different.

Vyasarpadi is one of the oldest and largest slums in Chennai covering a population of over 1.5 lakh. The community was challenged by inadequate facilities like lack of potable drinking water, faulty drainage and latrine systems, dilapidated roads, insufficient housing and government schools. With these challenges affecting their daily lives around 78% of the families were working in the unorganized sectors where the children were forced to support their parents to earn their daily meal.

“Change is not a destination it is a process. Every year through this event CRY manages to touch more lives, thereby encouraging children to take up education, proving that for an all-round development of a child, both formal education and exposure to sports are key factors. Today, Vyasarpadi is a great example of success and the residents have embraced this model of change and supporting the children and letting them pursue their dreams”said Suma Ravi, Regional Director (South), CRY.

“We strongly believe sports as a great facilitator of change. It develops a lot of qualities within a child like fostering team spirit, improving concentration, channelizing the energy in a positive way, which in turn helps the individual to lay a strong foundation for a bright future. We are happy to support CRY in its efforts to encourage education through sports while providing the corporate and the children a common platform to inspire and motivate each other,” said Mr. SukumarSrinivas, Managing Director, ShankaraBuildpro.

The event has been a great confluence of some of the top corporate teams and teams from Vysarpadi Children Empowerment Project who battle it out to support the cause for child rights. A carrier of hope, this event sees birth of role models who strives to build a better world for them and thereby that of their community around.
